Samuel Lucius Bestow (born March 8, 1823 in Williamsville , New York , †  January 10, 1907 in Chariton , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1892 and 1894 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Iowa.

Career

Samuel Bestow grew up on a farm in New York State. For many years he worked there himself in agriculture. During the civil war , he was excluded from active military service for health reasons. However, he served in the military administration, where he was involved in government contracts. After the war he worked in the trade. He ran a paper mill. He also worked in the wood and hardware store. Bestow became a school councilor and district council chairman in his New York homeland. In 1869 he moved to Iowa, where he built a new farm in Lucas County . Politically, he was initially a member of the Republican Party . He served in the Iowa Senate between 1875 and 1880 . He later switched to the Democrats .

In 1892, Bestow was elected Lieutenant Governor of Iowa alongside Horace Boies . He held this office between 1892 and 1894. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. He was the first Democratic Party politician to hold the post in Iowa. The next Democrat in this office, Nelson G. Kraschel , followed in 1933. Samuel Bestow died on January 10, 1907 in Chariton.
