The place goes back to a group of Norwegian immigrants who settled in the area from 1855. In 1870 a post office was set up on the western edge of today's town. From 1873, the first shops and handicraft businesses were established in the region, which was previously used for purely agricultural purposes. The construction of a railway line for the then Illinois Central Railroad in 1881 and a train station a year later increased the growth of the settlement. Roland was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1891.
