Audubon County was formed on January 15, 1851 from parts of Pottawattamie County. It was named after John James Audubon (1785-1851), an ornithologist and draftsman from Haiti .
The Audubon County courthouse in the city of the same name opened in 1940.

As of the 2010 census , Audubon County had 6,119 people in 2,731 households. The population density was 5.3 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.19 people lived in each of the 2,731 households.
The racial the population was composed of 98.6 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.6 percent of the population.
