Warren County was formed in 1846 from former parts of Polk County. It was named after Joseph Warren (1741–1775), a general who died in the American War of Independence .

As of the 2010 census , Warren County had 46,225 people in 17,008 households. The population density was 31.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.57 people lived in each of the 17,008 households.
