The Humboldt County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 9,815 people and a population density of 8.7 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Dakota City , named after the Dakota Indians.
geography
The county is located in north-central Iowa and is traversed by the Des Moines River . It has an area of 1,129 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. The following counties border Humboldt County:

history
Humboldt County was formed in 1851 as the smallest county in Iowa. It was named after Alexander von Humboldt .
On July 1, 1855, the county boundaries were redefined as land was added from Kossuth Counties and Webster Counties. On February 26, 1857, the old borders were restored. Humboldt College opened in 1872 and closed again in 1916 when no agreement could be reached with the county on taxes.
