Dexter was founded in 1868.

The town became famous for a shootout in July 1933 between members of the Bonnie and Clyde- led Barrow gang and police from all over the place.

On September 18, 1948, Dexter was the place where President Harry S. Truman gave a speech at a plowing competition in which he sharply attacked Congress and thus attracted great attention from the country's farmers. That speech was one of the most important of the 1948 election campaign that gave Truman another term in office.
