Atlantic is a town (with the status " City ") and the administrative seat of Cass County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 Atlantic had 7,112 inhabitants, the number of which had decreased to 6,937 by 2013.

DeWitt is at 41 ° 24'05 "north latitude and 95 ° 00'39" west longitude. The city extends over an area of 21.2 km², which is spread over 21.1 km² of land and 0.1 km² of water.

The city is 85 km east of Council Bluffs , where the Missouri River forms the border between Iowa and Nebraska . Its largest city, Omaha, is located on the opposite bank of the river. To the south it is 287 km via Saint Joseph to Kansas City in Missouri , Sioux Falls , the largest city of South Dakota , is 346 km to the northwest.
history
Atlantic was founded in 1868. While historians have not yet been able to determine the reason for the name Atlantic, there is a local legend that the city's founders thought the Atlantic was exactly half the distance between the Atlantic and the Pacific . With either name to choose from, a coin was flipped and the Atlantic name won.
The nearby Rock Island Railroad was critical to the further development of the city. The old railway depot is still there today and is now used as a building for the local chamber of commerce.
