history

Atlantic was founded in 1868. While historians have not yet been able to determine the reason for the name Atlantic, there is a local legend that the city's founders thought the Atlantic was exactly half the distance between the Atlantic and the Pacific . With either name to choose from, a coin was flipped and the Atlantic name won.

The nearby Rock Island Railroad was critical to the further development of the city. The old railway depot is still there today and is now used as a building for the local chamber of commerce.
