Silverton [ ˈsɪlvɚtn̩ ] is a small community in the US state of Colorado and the administrative seat of San Juan County . It is located in a valley in the San Juan Mountains around 280 km southwest of Colorado Springs and around 90 km north of the New Mexican border. Silverton was founded after silver was found in the 1870s and around ten years later it was at the height of its history when it was connected to the railway network.

Silverton is accessible via the 550 highway, known as the Million Dollar Highway between Durango and Ridgway , which connects the community via Red Mountain Pass with Ouray and via Molas Pass with Durango , the tourist center of southwestern Colorado. Today the city lives mainly from tourism, which is ensured by a daily steam train of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad from Durango.

The old core Silverton's the Blair Street was on July 4, 1961 as the Historic District to the National Historic Landmark explained. In October 1966, the Silverton Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
