Alfonso Franco

Alfonso Franco , called Argentero (* 1466 in Messina ; † 1523 ibid) was an Italian painter and silversmith of the Renaissance in Sicily .

life and work

Alfonso Franco was from 1479 a pupil of Jacobello d'Antonello da Messina and classmate of Antonello de Saliba . Franco worked mostly in Messina and the surrounding area. In Messina he created a saint for the Cathedral of Messina . Christopherus, in the S. Agostina was the panel painting The twelve year old Jesus in the temple and in the church of San Francesco di Paolo the painting San Sepolcro from 1520 with Mary, the body of Christ, St. Johannes dT and S. Franziskus as well as prayers of all classes. For the cathedral of Taormina he painted the Enthroned Madonna with two saints. Most of his pictures were destroyed by the earthquake in Messina in 1908 , only San Sepolcro and the painting in the cathedral of Taormina survived. His student was Mariano Riccio .
