Antonio de Saliba (* around 1466 / 67 in Messina , † around 1535 ibid; and Antonio da Saliba ) was an Italian painter.

Life

He was brother of Pietro de Saliba and nephew of Antonello da Messina . He was the more gifted of the two brothers. In his youth he orientated himself on his uncle, who was probably also his teacher, and Giovanni Bellini . He spent most of his youth in Venice before returning to Sicily in old age.

Antonello de Saliba's pictures are very close to the works of his uncle and many of them were even considered works by his hand in the past. His early pictures are characterized by grace, elegance and color. With increasing age, however, a rapid decline in the quality of his works can be seen. The modeling is getting harder and he used an increasingly smaller color palette. He often enriched his pictures with unnecessary and often unsightly details, such as B. completely unnatural draping of painted fabrics. While his early pictures are of an unusually high artistic level, his later works are hardly above those of many nameless Sicilian provincial painters.
