The crimson tiger ( Pyrenestes sanguineus ), also called crimson purple weaver or Liberia purple weaver , is a species from the finch family . No subspecies are distinguished. It is occasionally kept as an ornamental bird in Europe.

description

Crimson trildes reach a body length of 14 centimeters and are thus one of the largest species among the fine finches. The male has crimson plumage. The female, on the other hand, has less red and the plumage does not have the same sheen as the male. It is more brown on the chest, the feet are light horn-colored while the males are black-brown. Young birds have a brownish plumage and conspicuous yellow papillae in the corners of the beak.

The crimson contact call is soft, quiet and sounds like tssset . The singing, on the other hand, consists of a squeaky, six-syllable phase. The courtship repertoire includes a halmbalz and a flight ball. The diet consists mainly of grass seeds. They also take in rice.

The nest is built in the thick bushes. It is usually located in a fork of a branch, in the heart of a screw palm or in the dense tangle of creepers. The shape of the nest is rounded. Nests are up to 30 centimeters tall and have a side entrance. The clutch usually consists of three to 4 eggs. They are incubated by the parent birds for 16 days. The nestling period is an unusually long 24 days. They will be looked after by the parent birds for another two weeks.

The distribution area of the crimson is West Africa . It occurs there in the swamps, reed stands, lagoons and rice fields. Occasionally he is associated with the red breast seed cracker.

attitude

Crimson trildes are one of the most colorful species of finch because of their spectacular red plumage. However, their posture is extremely demanding. They are extremely shy and stress-sensitive birds. For their well-being, they must be kept in a densely structured aviary. Vertical structures made of bamboo, reed or papyrus stalks, for example, on which these birds climb, help to curb excessive claw growth. Birds with claws that are too long often get caught on bars or in dense branches.
