Jürgen Nicolai

Jürgen Nicolai (born October 24, 1925 in Neidenburg , East Prussia , † March 29, 2006 in Schortens ) was a German ornithologist , author and behavioral scientist.

biography

After studying zoology, anthropology and botany, he became a doctoral candidate in 1951 (doctorate in 1954 on the behavior of bullfinches ) and worked for Konrad Lorenz . In 1957 he followed Lorenz to the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology in Seewiesen . In the following years he went on research trips to East and West Africa. From 1977 to 1990 he was the senior scientific director of the Institute for Bird Research at the Helgoland ornithological station in Wilhelmshaven . His main research areas were: social behavior of birds (e.g. coastal birds), tribal history of behavior, systematics, bioacoustics but also the behavior of ornamental and aviary birds.
