John Dashiell Stoops

John Dashiell Stoops (born January 26, 1873 in New Castle , New Castle County , Delaware , USA , † November 18, 1973 in Grinnell , Poweshiek County , Iowa , USA) was an American philosopher .

Life

Family and education

The out of the US state located City native New Castle John Dashiell Stoops, son of William Thompson Stoops (1812-1892) and Mary A. Dashiell Stoops (1837-1873), devoted himself to the compulsory education studying philosophy at Dickinson College in Carlisle , Pennsylvania , 1894 he received the degree of a Bachelor of Arts . He continued his studies at Harvard University in Cambridge , in 1897 he earned the academic degree of a Master of Arts . John Dashiell Stoops then moved to Boston University , where he received his doctorate in 1899 as a Doctor of Philosophy . Postgraduate studies took him to Columbia University and Clark University in 1901 .

John Dashiell Stoops married Mary E. Milner on December 25, 1901. After her death he married Rose Edie Stoops on June 13, 1951. He died in November 1973 at the old age of 100.

Professional background

John Dashiell Stoops was initially employed as Professor of Philosophy at Mount Union College in Alliance in the US state of Ohio from 1899 to 1900 . From 1901, Stoops served as a minister in the First Congregational Church in Easthampton, Massachusetts . In 1904 John Dashiell Stoops followed a call as Professor of Philosophy at Grinnell College in Grinnell in the US state of Iowa , in 1943 he was retired .

Appreciated by generations of students as an excellent teacher, Stoops has published three books and numerous articles in philosophical journals. Grinnell College honored him in 1945 by awarding him an honorary doctorate in law . John Dashiell Stoops, one of the last surviving students of the philosopher William James (1842-1910) had memberships in the American Philosophical Association , where he presided over the Western Division, the American Association of University Professors, the academic honor society Phi from 1933 to 1934 Beta Kappa and in the Poweshiek Club. John Dashiell Stoops was a 32nd degree Freemason .
