Alliance is a city that is partially in Mahoning County and Stark County in the US state of Ohio , the smaller part in the west belongs to Mahoning County. The two parts are therefore also in different statistical census districts. During 2010 United States Census of as had City statuierte place 22,322 inhabitants. Alliance has officially been nicknamed "The Carnation City" since 1959, which is why the city has held a Carnation Festival every August since 1960. Alliance is home to Mount Union College , founded in 1846 .
traffic
The city was an important railway junction. Today there is only one Amtrak station in the city on the Capitol Limited route from Washington, DC to Chicago via Cleveland . The westbound Capitol Limited runs daily to Cleveland, Elyria, Sandusky, Toledo, Waterloo, Elkhart, South Bend and Chicago . In the opposite direction connects train Alliance with Pittsburgh , Connellsville, Cumberland, Martinsburg, Harpers Ferry , Rockville and Washington, DC The Capitol Limited is the only way Alliance to achieve nationwide, as there is no Fernlinienbus- or flight connection.
The public transport is through the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority ensures (SARTA).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 22.3 km² , which consists entirely of land, although the Mahoning River flows through the northeastern part of the city.
history
Alliance was formed in 1854 through the merger of three smaller towns. Williamsport , founded in 1827, Freedom, founded in 1838, and Liberty , founded in 1850 , agreed to merge because a railway junction was planned here. A fourth town, Mount Union , was incorporated in 1888 and in 1889 Alliance was incorporated as a city .
There are two different legends of how the city got its name. The obvious theory is that the name goes back to the "alliance" of the three smaller settlements to form a larger city. Another interpretation is the connection of the two major railroad lines that met in Alliance. These were the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad and the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad . The two routes crossed each other in the urban area - this crossing point was once known as "The Crossing".
It is often said about Alliance that it is one of the few cities where the main street is a dead end . This has to do with the fact that this street led directly to the train station and ended there. The station was an important hub for passenger traffic and a transshipment point for goods and goods.
The Carnation City
Alliance is also known as "The Carnation City". This title was bestowed on the city in 1959 by the Ohio General Assembly , the assembly of both houses of the Ohio State Parliament. The carnation ( Dianthus caryophyllus ) is also the official state flower of Ohio. The Carnations' association with Alliance dates back to 1866 when the physician Dr. Levi L. Lamborn bought six cloves to grow in his greenhouse . Back then, this plant was seldom bred in the United States. In 1876, Dr. Lamborn versus William McKinley for a seat in the United States Congress . William McKinley had attended Mount Union College in Alliance and was with Dr. Lamborn friends. In the election campaign, Lamborn therefore presented his political opponent with a carnation before each of the candidate debates, which he infected. McKinley won the election to the House of Representatives and made the carnation in the buttonhole his symbol in election campaigns. McKinley became Governor of Ohio and later the 25th President of the United States .
In 1884, Dr. Lamborn proposes to make the flower the state symbol of Ohio. Three years after the death of President McKinley in his second term after an assassination attempt while visiting the Pan-American Exposition , the Ohio General Assembly declared the red carnation the official state flower of the state in 1904 in memory of the president. Every year on January 29th, William McKinley's birthday, a bouquet of red carnations is placed in the hands of the McKinley statue in front of the House of Parliament in Columbus .
Since 1960 the Carnation City Alliance has held a Carnation Festival every year in August.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, the Alliance was inhabited by 23,253 people. The population density was 1042.7 people per km ². There were 9730 housing units at an average of 436.3 per km ². The Alliances population consisted of 85.51% White , 11.19% Black or African American , 0.17% Native American , 0.77% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 0.41% said other races belong to and 1.93% named two or more races. 1.17% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents alliances distributed to 8908 households, of which 28.5% were living in children under 18 years. 44.2% of households were married, 14.9% had a female head of the household without a husband and 36.4% did not form families. 30.8% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 14.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.
The population was divided into 23.5% minors, 15.5% 18–24 year olds, 24.8% 25–44 year olds, 20.1% 45–64 year olds and 16.2% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 women there were 87.5 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 83.3 men.
The median household income in Alliance was 30,078 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 37,011 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 31,033 compared to $ 20,063 for women. The per capita income was $ 15,185. 18.0% of the population and 12.7% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 26.8% of minors and 10.7% of those aged 65 and over.
