The Mahoning River is a 182 km long river in the northeastern US state of Ohio and western Pennsylvania . It forms the Beaver River at the confluence with the Shenango River . It drains into the Gulf of Mexico via the Ohio River and the Mississippi River . The Mahoning River is part of the Mississippi river system and drains an area of 2,932 km 2 . The source is located in the town of Winona in Columbiana County , Ohio. The Mahoning River initially flows in a north-easterly direction, turns after about 70 km at Leavittsburg at a right angle to the south-east and joins the Shenango River at New Castle , Pennsylvania.

The river course is divided into two sections: the upper course extends from Winona to Leavittsburg and the catchment area is characterized by agriculture. The lower reaches from Leavittsburg to the mouth at New Castle and the area is densely populated and industrialized. Above all, iron and steel works have settled on both sides of the river. This results in severe pollution of the water, so that the Ohio Department of Health warns against bathing in the river and eating fish caught there. The US Army Corps of Engineers estimates the renovation costs at around 100 million US dollars and the duration at 15 years. The project is expected to start at the end of 2010.
