The Shenango River is a 161 km long river in the western US state of Pennsylvania . It forms the Beaver River at the confluence with the Mahoning River . It drains into the Gulf of Mexico via the Ohio River and the Mississippi River . The Mahoning River is part of the Mississippi river system and drains an area of 2,761 km². The source is located in the town of Hartstown in Crawford County , Pennsylvania. The Shenango River initially flows in a north-westerly direction into the 69.15 km² large Pymatuning Reservoir , which was created in 1934 through the construction of a dam. The lake is completely located in two state parks of the same name , the common border of which is identical to the state border Pennsylvania / Ohio. The park area together with the water body amounts to a total of 126 km² of which 30 km² of land and 55.5 km² of water area are in Pymatuning State Park (Pennsylvania) and 26.8 km² of land and 13.65 km² of water area are in Pymatuning State Park (Ohio) .
Below the dam built by the US Army Corps of Engineers , the river turns south-southeast into Mercer County , Pennsylvania, before turning west. Shortly before the state border with Ohio, a second dam was built in 1965, which dammed the water of the river to the 14.4 km² Shenango River Lake . Beyond the dam, the river first flows southwest and for a short time through the state of Ohio before turning southeast. 3 miles north of the town of New Castle, it joins the Mahoning River to form the Beaver River. The main tributaries of the Shenango River are the Little Shenango River , Pymatuning Creek, and Nehannock Creek . 46% of the catchment area is used for agriculture, while 40% is covered by forest and the remainder by water or wetlands.
