The Pymatuning State Park is located east of Andover in Ashtabula County of the US state of Ohio . Together with the Pymatuning State Park of the same name in Pennsylvania , the state park includes the water of the Pymatuning Reservoir, which has been dammed up since 1934, and the extended bank areas. The area shares are 26.8 km² of land and 13.65 km² of water at an altitude of 305 meters.

The glaciers, which dominated the area over 14,000 years ago, left behind a hilly landscape with dozens of milled hollows in which the water collected and formed lakes, ponds, pools or swamps. The state park with the reservoir was marshland with swamp areas, alluvial forests, open water areas and a corresponding biodiversity, which also included bears, wolves, eagles, many water birds and larger populations of Weymouth pines .

At times the area was inhabited by Indians of the Monongahelas , who left the area for unknown reasons. Two of their mounds are under the current Pymatuning Reservoir. The first European settlers were fur hunters on the hunt for beaver skins and loggers looking for the strong straight trunks of the Weymouth pines, which were suitable as masts for sailing ships.

In 1933 a dam was built to regulate the inflow for the Shenango River and the Beaver River . In 1935 further land purchases were made on the west bank of the dammed Pymatuning Reservoir, in 1950 the Pymatuning State Park was implemented by the Division of Parks and Recreation . The recreational opportunities range from fishing, fishing and hunting to boating, swimming, hiking, cycling and nature watching.
