The Big Adventure ( English : The Great Adventure ) is an American black and white - television series from 1963 in which the 26 episodes in events and persons US history were dramatized. In 1965, eight episodes were dubbed in German and broadcast by ARD from May 16, 1965 to March 6, 1966 .

The series is designed as an anthology . Four episodes were broadcast as a two-parter. The individual episodes deal with self-contained events from American history such as the American Revolutionary War , the Civil War , the Indian Wars or the history of the American West or deal with historical personalities such as Sitting Bull , Nathan Hale , Jefferson Davis or Wild Bill Hickok .

The episode The Hunley Became Her Fate ( The Hunley ) is particularly well-known , in which the fate of the Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley was thematized, the wreck of which was still missing at the time but was rediscovered in 1995 and lifted in 2000. The episode was broadcast in the USA as the first episode on September 27, 1963, in West Germany as the fifth episode on November 7, 1965.

As far as is known, the series was not broadcast again after 1966. Nor was it edited on VHS or DVD . The ARD episodes may be in the German Broadcasting Archive (DRA) in Frankfurt am Main.
