Franz Josef Brand (born March 27, 1790 in Paderborn ; † January 12, 1869 there ) was a German high school teacher , librarian , historian , classical philologist and draftsman .

Life

He was the fourth child in a Paderborn family, attended the Theodorianum high school and studied philosophy in Paderborn from 1807 to 1809 . In 1812 he took over the teaching and management of a Paderborn trivial school . His salary initially consisted only of the students' school fees; a permanent position was not established until 1826. In addition to the school management, he also earned some money with drawing lessons at high school and at a newly founded Sunday school for craftsmen. Since 1828 he was also involved as a secretary and later as a librarian for the Paderborn Antiquities Association, which had just been founded . From 1835 to 1846 Brand worked as the first secular teacher in the teaching staff of the Theodorianum, which until then had been exclusively clergy. As a full professor he taught religion, German, Latin, mathematics and drawing. He was retired in 1847 because of a physical condition.

In his spare time he wrote textbooks, traveled to the Paderborn Monastery and produced numerous drawings, watercolors and sketches of his hometown and its surroundings, which today represent an important historical source for the state at that time. His works are in the archive of the Paderborn Antiquities Association.
