Lav Diaz or Lavrente Indico Diaz (born December 30, 1958 in Datu Paglas, Maguindanao ) is a Filipino film director.

Life

Diaz, whose parents were both teachers at the local school, studied at the Mowelfund Film Institute. He worked for a music magazine and experimented with photography and writing before getting into film production.

In the 1990s he lived temporarily in New Jersey and New York, where his film Batang West Side was made. His films, which mostly deal with the recent history of his home country, are present at international festivals and have been awarded numerous prizes. He is known among other things for the extraordinary running times of his films. Evolution of Filipino Family , a family drama about the time of the Marcos dictatorship, which was written over a period of ten years, has a length of 660 minutes. Diaz achieved his greatest success to date with the five and a half hour historical drama Mula sa kung ano ang noon , for which he received the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2014 . Again he dealt in the film with the effects of the Marcos dictatorship.

Lav Diaz at the Berlinale in February 2016

In 2016, Diaz received an invitation to compete at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival for his feature film Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis (A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery) . He describes the eight-hour black and white film about Andrés Bonifacio as “a marriage between history, literature and mythology.” In the same year, Diaz competed with the almost four-hour work Ang Babaeng Humayo in the 73rd Venice International Film Festival and won the main prize with the Golden Lion of the festival. The drama centers on a Filipino wife and mother (played by Charo Santos-Concio ) who is released from the labor camp after thirty years in prison on a false murder charge. She decides to take revenge on her ex-lover - the author of the intrigue that brought her to prison.

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
