The Woman Who Left (English for "The woman who went", Tagalog Ang Babaeng Humayo ) is a Filipino fictional film by the director Lav Diaz . The 2016 film won the Golden Lion Grand Prize at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival . The 226-minute work is in black and white .

Filmmaker Diaz was inspired by reading a Tolstoy short story about Ang Babaeng Humayo . For the leading actress Charo Santos-Concio it was the first feature film since her resignation as president of the ABS-CBN Corporation .

The German theatrical release is on February 4, 2018.

The Philippines, 1997: Horacia, a teacher convicted of innocent murder, is released from prison after 30 years in prison. In freedom she not only finds her personal environment completely changed, but is also confronted with a changed Filipino society. She decides to take revenge on the man responsible for her unjustified imprisonment, Rodrigo, her former lover. While she spies on him, she befriends fringe people.

criticism

The film service stated that the film revolves around in "artful black and white tableaus [...] a woman who has been cheated of her life while trying to break free from the shadow of the past". In doing so, he developed "into a touching panorama of the losers within Filipino society".
