Abrir puertas y ventanas (literally translated: "Open windows and doors"; English-language festival title: Back To Stay ) is a feature film by director Milagros Mumenthaler from the year 2011 . It is an Argentine-Swiss co-production. The Spanish-language film about three sisters mourning their deceased grandmother was awarded the Golden Leopard for best film at the 64th Locarno Film Festival. Abrir puertas y ventanas is Mumenthaler's feature film debut.

Marina, Sofia and Violeta are three sisters between the ages of 18 and 20 who grew up with their grandmother in Buenos Aires . When she dies, they have to learn to deal with the grief and to stand on their own two feet. For the introverted student Marina and the schoolgirl Sofia, the situation becomes more complicated when Violeta, the youngest, leaves the shared apartment because of her relationship with a musician.

Criticism and Awards

Michael Sennhauser wrote about the film that Mumenthaler stayed close to her characters, she “dispensed with extreme moments and twists, and in doing so brings out a natural intensity from her actresses that amazes. There is no wrong tone in this film, no artificial image, no scenes screwed to a basic framework. In its naturalness this is a film that is reminiscent of the Japanese master Hirokazu Koreeda , especially his quiet children's drama Nobody Knows from 2004. "

At the 64th Locarno Film Festival, Abrir puertas y ventanas was awarded the Golden Leopard for best film. At the same time, Maria Canale received a leopard for best actress.
