Brillante Mendoza (born July 30, 1960 in San Fernando (Pampanga) , Pampanga Province , Philippines ) is a Filipino film director .

Life

Mendoza has worked as a film director since 2005. Several of his films, which were shot in Mendoza's mother tongue, Tagalog , received awards at international film festivals such as Locarno , Cannes and Venice between 2005 and 2009 . His film Captive from 2011 was a competition entry for the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival 2012 . In the same year he received his second invitation to the competition of the 69th Venice Film Festival for Sinapupunan (English-language festival title: Thy Womb ) . In 2016 he received his third invitation for Ma'Rosa to compete at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
