Caligari Film Award
Every year since 1986, the Caligari Film Prize has been awarded to a film from the program of the Berlinale Forum . The prize is donated by the Federal Association of Communal Film Work and the film magazine Filmdienst . It is named after the classic German film Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari .
The initiator of the award is Heiner Roß (* 1942), from 1963 to 1979 managing director of the then Friends of the Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin and from 1979 to 2006 director of the municipal cinema Metropolis Kino in Hamburg. The prize honors a thematically and stylistically innovative film by the International Forum of New Cinema (since 2006 a section of the film festival as the Berlinale Forum ).
International Forum of Young Cinema
The forum was founded as an independent film festival that has been taking place parallel to the Berlinale since 1971 . Today it is organized as the “Berlinale Forum” by the Arsenal (Film Institute) under its own responsibility. In it, the film is "defended as an artistic form of expression against the drawing of boundaries and categorizations". His aim is to “maintain the cinema as a field of experimentation and to strengthen developments that have yet to find a wider public”. The term “the young film” is to be understood today in the sense of “the new film”, in the founding years, which lasted at least until 1986, it was also intended as “young at heart”. The English name for the forum is accordingly today The International Forum of New Cinema .
The forum does not award any prizes itself, but five prizes (as of 2009) are awarded to films in the forum program by five independent juries. Juries that award their prizes on behalf of external organizations and institutions that are independent of the festival are considered independent. The Caligari Film Prize is considered the most prestigious of these independent jury awards.
jury
The three-member jury consists of the Federal Association of Communal Film Work and a representative of two representatives Filmdienst together.
price
The prize consists of a statuette , handcrafted from black slate, and a prize of 4,000 euros (as of 2010). Until 2009, half of the prize money went to the director and half to the future distributor of the award-winning film. Since 2010, the award has been used to invite the director to tour selected municipal cinemas (KoKi) with the award-winning film . The statuette was designed by the Cologne sculptor Gesina Liebe (* 1948 in Göttingen), who designs it every year and is financed by the Rheinischer Merkur publishing group . The award ceremony takes place on the last Friday of the festival in the Arsenal cinema in the Filmhaus on Potsdamer Platz .
