Fernando Pérez Valdés (born November 19, 1944 in Havana ) is a Cuban film director and screenwriter .

Life

Fernando Pérez Valdés is one of the most important international filmmakers in Cuba. Born in Havana in 1944, he began working as a production assistant and translator at the Cuban film institute ICAIC ( Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos ) as early as 1962 during his studies . Pérez wrote film reviews for the film magazine Cine Cubano , led cinema debates and completed his language and literature studies at the University of Havana in 1970. He then worked as an assistant director and also as a Russian teacher. Between 1974 and 1984 Pérez made over 20 documentaries and newsreels, including Camilo (1982) about Camilo Cienfuegos and Omara (1983) about Omara Portuondo , before he made his first feature film Dangerous Life ( Clandestinos ) in 1987 . He then made Hello Hemingway (1990) and Madagascar (1994).

His two subsequent films Life, a Whistle from 1998 and Suite Havanna from 2003 are among the milestones of Cuban cinema and have received numerous prizes, including the special prize of the jury at the Sundance Film Festival , the SIGNIS Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival , the Goya Award given by the Spanish Film Academy and the CICAE ( Confédération Internationale des Cinémas d'Art et d'Essai , International Association of Art Theaters ) in the Forum of International Film at the Berlinale.

In 2007, he turned Madrigal , of René Clair is dedicated. With José Martì, El Ojo del Canario , a film about the Cuban freedom fighter José Martí , he achieved international recognition again in 2010.

In 2014 he directed a music video for the first time : he illustrated the song Canción fácil by the composer Marta Valdés , sung by Haydée Milanés .

In addition to the awards he received for his work as a director and screenwriter, Fernando Pérez was honored with the Premio Casa de las Américas in 1982 for his book "Corresponsales de guerra", in which he describes the struggle of young cineastes against the Somoza regime in Nicaragua describes. Fernando Pérez was Academic Director of the International College for Film and Television (Spanish: Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión, EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños from 1993 to 1995 . In addition, he taught as a professor of film history at the Universidad de la Habana. In spring 2016 he held the Friedrich Dürrenmatt visiting professorship at the University of Bern .

He is married to the German film director Claudia von Alemann and lives in Havana.
