Marie Losier (born 1972 in Boulogne-Billancourt , France ) is a French filmmaker and curator who is known for her film portraits of avant-garde directors and avant-garde musicians . Her films have won awards and shown in museums and festivals.

Live and act

Losier studied American literature at the University of Paris-Nanterre ( France ) and, from 1994, fine arts at Hunter College in New York City . She got into filmmaking by chance. Losier's films, in which she works primarily documentary, are usually about her relationships with other avant-garde artists. In the age of digital media, she has dedicated herself to analogue techniques on 16mm film. Her shooting is considered “a live event or a shared experience in which Losier, the hand-held Bolex camera in tow, is both a participant and creator.” Marie Losier approaches the portrayed in a dreamy way, avoiding classic interview situations.

Her films have been shown in museums and at festivals. In 2018 her work was added to the collection at MoMA in New York and presented in a retrospective.

In previous years she was a regular guest at the Berlinale, where several films were shown, including The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, for which she won the Teddy Award in 2011 and three other prizes from independent juries in the Forum film series .

On the occasion of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival 2020 she was a member of the jury of the Berlinale Dokumantarfilmpreis , which is donated by Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) .

Marie Losier had lived and worked in the United States for 20 years. In 2018 she returned to Paris.
