Olivier Py (born July 24, 1965 in Grasse ) is a French actor, director, theater manager and author of stage works.

Life

Py attended school in Cannes and studied in Paris at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique . He works as a director, actor and writer. In 1997, he was in Orléans director of the Center national de création d'Orléans and 2007 in Paris director of the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe until he replaced there in 2011 for political reasons and by Luc Bondy was replaced. Since 2001 he has had several commissions for opera productions at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and in 2008 with The Rake's Progress by Igor Stravinsky, his first production at the Opéra National de Paris ( Palais Garnier ). In April 2012 he realized the opera Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas at the Theater an der Wien . In 2015 he also directed the first version of the Flying Dutchman there .

Py has designed, written and published a variety of theater productions. His play, The Sun , which reflects the theater situation , was premiered in 2011 at the Volksbühne in Berlin . In 2012 Py staged for the first time as an opera director in Germany at the Opera of the City of Cologne ( Die Macht des Schicksals von Giuseppe Verdi ).

Py has directed the Avignon Festival since 2013 , where he first worked in 1995.
