action
Chloé works as a make-up artist for fashion shoots. She lives not far from Place de la Bastille in a shared flat that she shares with the gay Michel. She has been single for a long time, but shares her room with the black cat Gris-Gris. When she goes to the seaside for a week, nobody is ready to take care of her cat. Through a tip in the neighborhood, Chloé stumbles across old Madame Renée, who is used to taking care of the pets of the vacationers in the neighborhood. Gris-Gris stays with her. At the end of the vacation, Chloé wants to pick up her cat from Madame Renée, but she is inconsolable: Gris-Gris ran out of the tilted kitchen window three days ago in an unobserved moment and has been unable to find it since then. Madame Renée has already searched the neighborhood several times and also asked the neighbors, but no one saw the cat.
Encouraged by Michel, Chloé starts looking for gris-gris in the area. She meets Djamel, who fell off the roof as a child and has been a little mentally retarded since then. However, Djamel is helpful and kind-hearted and promises to keep an eye out for Gris-Gris. Soon afterwards, with him and Michel, Chloé began to hang up posters in the neighborhood referring to the runaway cat. Madame Renée, in turn, gradually informed all the old women in the neighborhood about Chloé and the runaway cat. Soon Chloé is regularly approached, asked about gris-gris and given comforting words. The whole neighborhood takes part in their search. Djamel is also getting more attention in the district, as you can always see him by Chloé's side when he is looking for the cat. However, she rejects his advances, even if she puts a strain on the single life. When she cannot sleep at night, she observes someone who feels the same way: painter Bel Canto has his studio on the other side of the apartment block. Chloé knows from Madame Renée that he couldn't get over the separation from his wife.
Because she is encouraged at work to dare to look more daring, one evening Chloé dares to leave the house in a mini dress. She goes to a bar where she flirts with a young man but is harassed by another aggressive man who eventually has to be kicked out of the bar. Other men also harass her so that the barmaid brings her home in the end. The woman also makes advances, but Chloé refuses to approach. Back in her room, she is depressed. She tries to get closer to Michel, but he makes it clear to her that he really doesn't like women.
It has been a few days since Gris-Gris disappeared, when Madame Renée fears that she has found the cat dead. Fortunately, it's just a mix-up. Djamel's cat find on a house roof also turns out to be the wrong animal. One day Chloé sees the young man from the bar again. She finds out that he is a drummer who fills entire living quarters with his music and has already had a lot of trouble with Madame Renée. Chloé flirts with him and they both end up in his apartment and in bed with each other. A phone call interrupts their get-together and the drummer leaves for an appointment. Chloé remains sobered.
It's been twelve days since Gris-Gris disappeared. Madame Renée is so badly off because of her grief that she has to stay in bed. Chloé and Djamel visit her and cook her a soup. Chloé hears Gris-Gris meow. He had never left the apartment, but was stuck behind the stove. Chloé frees the cat and feeds it back up. Some time later, Bel Canto moves out of his apartment. He will leave Paris and move to a suburb. Chloé helps him carry boxes. In a café around the corner, Bel Canto is warmly welcomed by the residents of the neighborhood. A short conversation with Chloé ends with a promise to keep in touch. The moving van drives off and Chloé smiles after him before she starts to run.
