The building of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry ( Ukrainian Будівля МЗС України / Budiwlja Ministerstwo sakordonnych spraw Ukrajiny ) is an architectural monument in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev and has housed the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine since 1991 .
The monumental building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with its 40 meter high columns is located in Kiev's Shevchenko Rajon at No. 1 Michaelplatz in the immediate vicinity of the Michael's monastery .
history
At the time of the Soviet regime , a symbol of the communist rulers was to be built on the site of the monastery complex of Michael’s Monastery. The plans from 1934 envisaged, in addition to the current building, a monumental building for the Council of People's Commissars and a 75 m high Lenin monument. From Podil , instead of the funicular , a huge staircase should lead up to it.
For this reason, the cathedral, the bell tower and the Three Saints Church were blown up in the summer of 1936, but instead of the planned monumental architectural ensemble, only the building of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine in the style of socialist classicism , today's Foreign Ministry, was built in 1938 . It stands in the place of the Three Saints Church and was built according to plans by the Leningrad architect Jossyp Hryhorowytsch Lanhbard ( Йосип Григорович Лангбард ).
The construction of the second building and the monument was prevented by the Second World War , the remaining area was then used for sports facilities and in the 1990s for the reconstruction of the Michael monastery.
