Podil (Ukrainian Поділ ; Russian Подол / Podol ) is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the Ukrainian capital Kiev .

location

Podil is located on the right (western) Dneprufer north of the city center of Kiev and is within the Podil district , which gave it its name. The district is connected to the U2 (blue line) of the Kiev metro via the Tarassa Shevchenka, Kontraktowa Ploschtscha and Poschtowa Ploschtscha subway stations . Two Dnepr bridges lead from Podil over the river: the pedestrian bridge to the Trukhaniv Island and the Podil bridge, which is under construction, on the left bank. The listed Kiev ship pier ( Rytschkowyj Woksal ) is located on the river , from which excursion and cruise ships dock and depart for river trips. Opposite is the Podil rack railway (Funikuler), which leads from Poschtowa Ploschtscha up to the upper town. The Andreassteig, which is largely reserved for pedestrians, also leads there . Car and bus traffic leads to the center via the Wolodymyrsteig. The northern edge of the district is formed by an expressway on the Dnepr, via which traffic from Obolon in the north leads to the center. Podil is connected to the western and north-western parts of Kiev by numerous tram lines.

history

Podil in 1902

The oldest settlement finds in what is now the city of Kiev come from the Magdalenian culture and are located on Kiev-Kyrill-Wohnplatz on Kyryliwska Street ( вул. Кирилівська ) No. 59 to 61 in Podil.

Podil was established in the 9th century after the upper town of Kiev was founded by the Polyan princes Kyj, Shchek and Choriv as a quarter of fishermen, craftsmen and traders. A river port in Podil was built on the banks of the Dnieper as an important stop on the way from the Varangians to the Greeks . However, Podil was settled much earlier. Archaeologists found traces of settlement from 25,000–15,000 years BC. BC. In 945 was built in Podil, the first church in the city of Kiev. The baptism of the pagan Kievan Rus , initiated by Grand Duke Vladimir I , also took place in 988 on the Dneprufer in Podil. After the destruction of the Kiev upper town in the course of the Mongol invasion of the Rus in 1240, Podil became the center of the city and remained so for centuries. From the 15th to the 19th century, the Kiev city council was housed in Podil. One of the most important and still active markets of Kiev, the rye market (Shytnij Rynok) is located in Podil.

After a major fire in 1811 , the district was renovated by the Kiev city architect Andrei Ivanovich Melenski, who lives in Podil, with numerous buildings in the classical style.
