Podil Synagogue

The Podil Synagogue or Rosenberg Synagogue ( Ukrainian Синагога на Подолі / Synahoha na Podoli ) is a synagogue located at 29 Shchekavitskyj Street in Podil , an old part of Kiev .

history

In 1895 a synagogue was built in Kiev for the first time thanks to Gabriel Jakob Rosenberg, which was expanded in 1916 thanks to the financial support of Vladimir Gorazjewitsch Ginzburg, the son of the banker Horace Günzburg .

On April 8, 1929, the Kiev city council decided to close the synagogue, which was then used as a riding stable.

After the Second World War , the building became a synagogue again. In 1990, Jaakow Dow Bleich became rabbi of the Kiev Jewish community and country rabbi of Ukraine and the first service was celebrated in the synagogue. A yeshiva and a Jewish high school were opened. When the President of Ukraine signed a decree on the restitution of religious objects to religious communities on March 4, 1992 , the synagogue was transferred back to the Israelite religious community of Kiev. Another renovation was necessary in September 2002.
