The Orthodox church building was built in the classicist style from 1808 to 1814 by the architect Andrei I. Melenski , who also built the St. Nicholas Church on Askold's grave in Kiev . Its octagonal shape is characteristic. The church is located on Postplatz , near the Dnieper river , its ship landing stage and the inclined elevator (funicular) to the upper town. The body of Taras Shevchenko , Ukraine's most famous poet, was laid out in it on May 6th and 7th, 1861, and the place of worship is therefore known as “Shevchenko's Church”. It was destroyed in 1930 and rebuilt between 2002 and 2005 by the Ukrainian Monument Authority.
