The three-aisled church is an architectural monument of national importance and is located on Kontraktowa Square west of the Hostynyj Dwir in the historic Podil district . history

The church in the early 20th century

middle Ages

The previous church was the main church of the Kievan Rus in Podil after it was built between 1131 and 1136 . In 1240 it was destroyed during the Mongol invasion of the Rus . After being rebuilt in the 15th century, it was consecrated again on March 30, 1474, but was damaged and looted again in 1482 by the Tatars under Meñli I. Giray .

Modern times

The Italian architect Sebastiano Brachi reconstructed the church between 1613 and 1614. In the first half of the 17th century it was the Metropolitan Church of the Orthodox. Further fires in 1651 and 1718 led to renewed renovation work. In the years 1752 to 1772 the church was rebuilt in the style of the Ukrainian Baroque and in 1770 a five-storey bell tower was built according to plans by the architect Ivan Grigorowitsch-Barski . A minor fire in 1808 and the major fire in Podil in 1811 led to renovation work with classical elements by the Kiev-based architect Andrei Melenski . The bell tower was rebuilt in Empire style in 1835 .
