Jean-Jacques Andrien

Jean-Jacques Andrien (born June 1, 1944 in Verviers , Liege Province ) is a Belgian film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

After attending school, Andrien studied film studies at the Institut national supérieur des arts du spectacle et des techniques de diffusion (INSAS) with professors such as André Souris (1899–1970) and André Delvaux . After completing his studies, he began his career in the film industry in 1968 as an assistant director in the Delvaux-directed film Un soir, un train with Yves Montand and Anouk Aimée .

In his later own works he was inspired by his hometown and the Wallonia region , whereby his films were influenced by the school of painting in Verviers and often portrayed serious, somewhat introspective characters.

Already in his first films he developed a personal and original style due to the lonely main characters who are always looking for their own roots. In Le Fils d'Amr est Mort (1975) with Pierre Clémenti and Claire Wauthion (* 1945), for whom he also wrote the screenplay, the main actor Pierre is a man living in Brussels who becomes friends with an immigrant from Tunisia . After finding this dead and realizing that he actually didn't know him, Pierre decides to travel to Tunisia to find out who his friend was. For the film Andrien received the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival in 1975 .

In the vast land of Alexis Droeven ( "Le grand paysage d'Alexis Droeven", 1981) by Jan Decleir , Nicole Garcia and Maurice Garrel leads Andrien the dialogues between Alexis and his father on current topics such as the milk quota of the European Community , but also about the problems of linguistics . These problems express the whole of reality like memoirs. The film was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1981 .

In the film Sehnsucht nach Australien (1989) with Fanny Ardant and Jeremy Irons , Andrien, who also wrote the screenplay, portrays an Australian wool merchant who returns to his hometown of Verviers after his brother's business is threatened with bankruptcy . The dialectic of inwardness and landscape, of roots and exile is constantly present. At the same time, in this work he creates a method of balancing the accuracy of the anecdote and the universality of his approach. The director uses many techniques to illustrate his paradoxes: for example, he distorts the soundtrack and uses wrong voices in image sequences. The film was nominated for the main prize at the 1989 Venice International Film Festival and won the Osella for Giorgos Arvanitis' camera .
