Vinton Hayworth (born June 4, 1906 in Washington, DC , † May 21, 1970 in Van Nuys , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Hayworth began his acting career as a performer and news anchor for radio programs in the 1920s. In addition, he also appeared on various stages, including a. on New York Broadway . From 1934 he took on his first roles in feature films, sometimes using the pseudonym Jack Arnold , which he borrowed from a character he embodied from the radio program Myrt and Marge . From then on, Hayworth starred in numerous B-films of various genres such as the Abbott and Costello comedy It Ain't Hay (1943), the film drama The Great Man (1956; by and with José Ferrer ) or the horror film Die Schreckenskammer ( Chamber of Horrors , 1966). Probably the most famous film to which Hayworth was cast was Stanley Kubrick's monumental epic Spartacus with Kirk Douglas in the title role.

From the mid-1940s, Hayworth also increasingly worked in television productions. He has guest roles in numerous popular television series such as Perry Mason , Smoking Colts , The Munsters and Big Valley . He gained particular fame for his role in Sidney Sheldon's The Charming Jeannie . In this fantasy comedy series, Hayworth played NASA General Winfield Schaeffer, the boss of Major Anthony Nelson , played by Larry Hagman . Overall, Hayworth worked in well over 100 different film and television productions.

In addition, Hayworth was one of the founding members of the US Association of Radio and Television Professionals ("AFTRA"), which he chaired from 1951 to 1954 as President.

His older sister Volga was the mother of actress Rita Hayworth , who called herself Rita Cansino at the beginning of her career and used Hayworth as a stage name from 1937. Through his marriage to Jean Owens, Vinton Hayworth also became the uncle of Ginger Rogers , who was brought to him in her films such as Vivacious Lady (1938), Carefree by Dr. Flagg - Carefree ( Carefree , 1938) and William Dieterle's film Marry Me, Crooks! ( The Confession , 1964) obtained small supporting roles.

On May 21, 1970, Vinton Hayworth died of a heart attack at the age of only 63 .
