Leah Purcell (born August 14, 1970 in Murgon , Queensland ) is an Australian actress , singer and playwright .

Life and accomplishments

Purcell made her debut in the television series Police Rescue , in which she appeared in 1995 and 1996. In the drama Somewhere in the Darkness (1998) she played one of the bigger roles. In the film drama Lantana (2001) she played a police investigator who, together with her colleague Leon Zat ( Anthony LaPaglia ), is looking for a missing psychotherapist ( Barbara Hershey ). For this role she received the IF Award in 2001 together with Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong , Rachael Blake and Daniella Farinacci ; in 2002 she was nominated for the Film Critics Circle of Australia Award . Her appearance in the documentary Black Chicks Talking (2001), which she also directed, won her the IF Award and the Audience Award at the Brisbane International Film Festival in 2002 . In the film drama Jindabyne - Somewhere in Australia (2006), she starred alongside Laura Linney and Gabriel Byrne .

Purcell's drama The Drover's Wife (2016) has won numerous awards, including the grand prize of the New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards 2017, the grand prize of the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards 2017 and eight other prizes.
