Reviews

The film magazine Cinema found the film to be so “witty and funny that you can't help but want a sequel”. It appears "very simple at first glance", but it offers "a precise analysis of the moral and social values of the 'Swingin' Sixties ''".

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of December 23, 1969 that the film should look modern, but the two main characters speak a language that doesn't work. No person Ebert has ever met behaved like that. The film doesn't make any statements about real people. Hal Erickson blasphemed in the All Movie Guide that the film, which was hailed as progressive and significant when it was released, is now "as provocative as a news program". Even Leonard Maltin was not enthusiastic about the film: "Harmless, unconvincing nullity. Hoffman seems to be sleepwalking through the film - the audience joins him. "

The Time Out Film Guide, on the other hand, considered the Bullitt film to be another successful demonstration of Peter Yates ' directorial skills. Variety saw the 1969 film as a small, simple story that started with sex and ended with love. Hoffman create a personality that is believed to have more depth than the camera can capture. Farrow plays the "attractive, feminine and lively" Mary in such a way that the viewer worries about her.
