Flesh (also: Andy Warhol's Flesh ) is a film from 1968. It was produced by Andy Warhol , directed and screenplayed by Paul Morrissey , who, like lead actor Joe Dallesandro , regularly appeared in Warhol productions. The film marks the debut of actors Patti D'Arbanville , Jackie Curtis and Candy Darling .

The stick boy Joe is woken up by his wife with a pillow fight. After the two of them have fooled around a bit, his wife reveals to him that she needs $ 200 for the abortion of a friend and that he should get the money today. After Joe feeds his son a muffin and plays with him while his wife does the laundry, he goes out to 42nd and looks for suitors . With his first customer he has to sneak out after the act and goes out on the street again. An elderly man gives him $ 100 to model for him. The artist holds a long monologue about the worship of the body and photographs it in typical poses of Greek statues and lets him recreate the discobolos, among other things . Then he draws nude pictures of Joe.

Back in a park, he gives a young prostitute a few tips and then moves on to meet a group of transvestites . While the striptease dancer Geri has fun with him orally , the other two read fashion and gossip magazines. Then the four of them fool around until Joe goes to his next suitor. The veteran of the Korean War is more on telling, because it can not get an erection because of his war wounds. He reads Joe from a sex booklet and asks him to pose . Finally, Joe can talk him out of some money and goes home.

Meanwhile, his wife cuddles with his girlfriend, who now no longer wants an abortion. The three talk a little longer, then fall asleep.

Flesh lives through its apparently amateurish style and differs from conventional Hollywood productions. The original film material is full of sound and image jumps, the image is sometimes blurred or ends abruptly. It was shot on location in New York City . The film is the first part of the underground trilogy of Andy Warhol's The Factory . This was followed by Trash (1970) and Heat (1972). All three films were directed by Paul Morrissey and each star was starred by Joe Dallesandro.

The film competed with the simultaneously shot Asphalt Cowboy , in which Warhol's Factory was supposed to participate, but ultimately only played a small role in John Schlesinger's film. The plan was to bring out a more authentic film with a similar topic before the competing product. Morrissey took over the direction, as Andy Warhol was still suffering from the consequences of the assassination by Valerie Solanas . Warhol did not attend a filming appointment. Filming took place in August / September 1968 and cost about $ 1,500. The film premiered at the Garrick Theater in New York, where the film ran for seven months and grossed between $ 10,000 and $ 12,000 in the first few weeks.

On January 15, 1970, the film was shown in the London cinema The Open Space . With three minutes to go, the police searched the premises and confiscated the film. However, the Scotland Yard stopped the investigation and released the film again. However, the film was still subject to film censorship. Morrissey then attempted to negotiate with the British Board of Film Classification , which eventually resulted in the film's clearance. The University of Edinburgh refused to show the film in the wake of the controversy, which led to student protests. As a result, the film was re-shown in a New York cinema on 55th Street and British nationals were given free entry. It was later announced that the British distributor under Jimmy Vaughan was staging parts of the controversy in order to get advertising for the film.

In Germany, Constantin Film took over the distribution and brought the film to German cinemas.
