October: The French photographer Louis Le Prince is granted a patent for a film camera. In the same month he puts in Leeds with Roundhay Garden Scene and Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge , the oldest known movies of the story here.
Étienne-Jules Marey first used roll film for his chronophotographs .
Émile Reynaud developed a projection system for drawn images with the Théâtre Optique , which he did not present to the public until 1892.
William KL Dickson begins work in Thomas Alva Edison's laboratories on the development of an apparatus for recording “moving images”.
