Anna Quirentia Nilsson (born March 30, 1888 in Ystad , Sweden , † February 11, 1974 in Hemet , California , USA ) was a Swedish actress who was a film star in Hollywood during the silent film era .

Life

Anna Q. Nilsson was born in Sweden in 1888. After her first experiences on the Swedish stage , she emigrated to the United States in 1910. There she first worked as a nanny and later as a photo model . She was the model for posters, including for Penrhyn Stanlaws . After one such illustration was published, she was offered a role in the film Molly Pitcher . Nilsson accepted and became a star overnight. Her career took off, she worked successfully for FBO , Paramount Pictures , MGM and Warner Brothers . Films like Seven Keys to Baldpate (1917), Soldiers of Fortune (1919), The Toll Gate and The Luck of the Irish (both 1920) as well as The Lotus Eater (1921) achieved great success.

In 1925, at the height of her career, shortly before the appearance of the talkie , Nilsson fell from his horse while riding and fell so unhappily that she was paralyzed . She had to take a break for two years and learn to walk again. From 1927 she worked on her comeback and made several films a year, including The Babe Comes Home with baseball legend Babe Ruth . With the increasing popularity of the sound film, she withdrew more and more from the film business; the Swedish accent and her increasing age became a problem. For two decades she was almost entirely devoted to charity. She only returned to the screen for very small roles (often unnamed), for example in Vincente Minnelli's 1951 An American in Paris . Her best-known role in the sound film era is a cameo (with Buster Keaton and HB Warner ) as a card player in Billy Wilder's drama Twilight Boulevard (1950) with Gloria Swanson .

Anna Q. Nilsson was married twice. Both marriages were divorced after a short time and remained childless. Nilsson died of heart failure in California in 1974 . She was the first Swede who a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood received.
