Vernoil-le-Fourrier (until 9 July 2006. official Vernoil ) is a French municipality with 1266 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Maine-et-Loire in the region of Pays de la Loire .

geography

Vernoil is located 17 kilometers northeast of Saumur and around 40 kilometers east of the capital Angers in the Baugeois landscape . To the south of the village , extensive forests spread out towards the Loire Valley .

history

The presence of dolmens indicates a long history of settlement. In Roman times the Blois - Tours road passed the district. Vernoil was the most important road junction in the region under the Romans and Merovingians . When the English reached Anjou in 1420 and sacked the country, Vernoil was fortified. In 1550 the place received market rights . On March 13, 1564, the young King Charles IX visited. with his mother Catherine de Medici the castle of Vernoil, in which at that time Jean III. de Broc resided.

In the early morning of December 10, 1711, an earthquake struck the area. It caused great damage. The 11th century church was also badly damaged. In 1790 Vernoil became the capital of the canton as part of the French regional reform. In 1801 the canton was dissolved again and most of it was added to the canton Longué. In 1815 Prussia invaded the Anjou and Vernoil was plundered. In 1871 the German army occupied the region. Vernoil was also under German occupation from 1940 to 1944. On August 11, 1944, the Allies under George S. Patton liberated the place.

Economy and Infrastructure

Vernoil is known for its good facilities in relation to its size with service companies, craftsmen and shops. The weekly market , which was moved from Friday to Saturday in 1880, is currently (2006) still being run by a single agricultural product dealer. The focus of the industrial sector is on wood processing, so there is a plywood factory and the manufacture of wooden boxes.

In addition to a modern primary school, Vernoil can also have a music school, which has a central function for the population of the surrounding communities.

The Romanesque church of Saint-Vincent , classified as a Monument historique , dates back to the 11th century but has undergone major changes over time. Well-preserved monastery buildings from the 15th century adjoin the church. The castle is one of the oldest preserved castle buildings in Anjou. It was built in 1265 by the namesake of the village, Geoffroy Le Fourrier. In 1609 an extensive renovation was carried out by the de Broc family, who had owned the facility since 1460. The castle cannot be visited inside.

Leisure and entertainment

A musical society has been enlivening cultural life since 1884. There is a wide range of sports on offer, with basketball enjoying great popularity as in the region in general . The special regional form of boules , the boule de fort , is very popular.

Literary processing

The book Voyage à Pitchipoï by Jean-Claude Moscovici tells the story of a Jewish family in Vernoil under the conditions of the German occupation during the Second World War (Édition Médium). Moscovici was abducted in 1942 at the age of six and lost several family members.
