Broomball

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Broomball is a team sport that is played with five field players and a goalkeeper on an approximately 60 m long and 30 m wide ice surface. The aim of the game is to use a broom (bat) to push the game device, a ball, into the opposing goal. The players are equipped with special anti-slip shoes in order to have better traction on the smooth ice . Two referees check whether the rules of the game, which are similar to the rules of ice hockey , are being observed.

Broomball is organized internationally by the International Federation of Broomball Associations (IFBA). To date, the world association has 13 member associations (as of 2018). The Canadian Broomball League is considered the best in the world.

Rules of the game

The rules of the game in broomball correspond to those of ice hockey .

Indoor broomball ball

The ball weighs 270-280 grams and is 18-20 inches in circumference . Different dimensions and different materials are used for outdoor use.

matchfield

  • Like ice hockey, Broomball is played on a clean, snow- free ice surface. The dimensions of the playing field are 60 × 30 meters.
  • The goal: The dimensions of the goal are exactly 1.50 × 2.10 meters and are mandatory. The goal posts must be red. The goalie area is marked with a red semicircle with a diameter of 1.80 meters.
  • Reserve benches: Each playing field must be equipped with benches for the players. Since the field players are constantly exchanged during the game due to a flying change, the benches must be as close as possible to the center line. Only the players with equipment and three team leaders (e.g. the coach) may be on the bench.
  • Penalty Benches: Players who break the rules must go to the penalty bench to serve their sentence (at least two minutes) (see Penalties).
  • Captain: The captain of the team and his assistant must wear a clearly visible "C" and an "A" on their bibs . This allows you to publicly represent the team and ask the referee for explanations regarding his interpretation of the rules of the game during the game.
  • Coach: The team coach must announce the names and numbers of all players present as well as the names of the captain, his assistant and the goalkeeper before the game. However, his main role is to simplify and keep track of his team's moves before the game, during the game and after the game.
  • referee
    • They are the representatives of the Broomball Committee during a game. In doing so, they must strictly adhere to the committee's rules of the game.
    • Two referees with equal rights must be on the field during a game.

Teams, players

Players on the ice surface (rule 400)

A team usually consists of 22 players. A maximum of six players may be on the ice at the same time during a game. In principle, these consist of five field players and a goalkeeper, in special situations the goalkeeper is replaced by a sixth field player.

This scheme can be deviated from, especially in under- or over-number situations.

By default, the game is played in rows or blocks - this means that forwards and defenders always play with the same partners if possible. A team should have four lines of defense (4 × 2 players = 8 players) and four lines of attack (4 × 3 players = 12 players). With two goalkeepers the number of 22 players per team is reached.

A team must designate a captain and two assistants. To identify them, they have a “C” (captain) or “A” (assistant captain) on their chest.

The substitution of field players is not only possible during game interruptions, but can also take place "on the fly".

equipment

To prevent injuries, comprehensive protective equipment (similar to ice hockey) is mandatory. Since the goalkeepers are exposed to an increased risk from shots fired at them, they have even more comprehensive protective equipment than the outfield players. The club jersey is worn over all equipment. Equipment must be worn correctly during the game, if not, the referee can issue a two-minute penalty for "improper equipment" .

  • Helmet without a grille with a visor (the players can decide for themselves whether they want to wear a visor) for players over 18 years of age. However, at the official World Cup it is mandatory to wear a grid. Women are only allowed to play with bars, nothing else is allowed.

The game

The effective playing time is twice 20 minutes. There must be a break of at least two minutes after the first half. Then the side is swapped. A time-out of one minute per team is permitted. The winning team receives 3 points. If there is an equalization, both teams receive one point. In the event of a loss, there are no points. After a win after extra time (in finals), the winning team receives 2 points.

history

It is difficult to make precise statements about the roots of broomball because there are so many different theories. The most likely is the one that takes us back to Canada in the early 19th century. Back then, some women went there with brooms, balls and anti-slip boots to practice this sport, which was very similar to the ice hockey game. Broomball not only enjoyed success in Canada, it slowly spread across national borders. On November 7th, 2004 the first broomball club in Germany was founded - the Flying Brooms . The first Broomball EM took place from 16.-18. October 2009 in Telfs near Innsbruck. The national team from Italy became first European champions in both the men and mixed categories . The first Golden Goal in the history of the European Broomball Championship was achieved by Thomas Lutz , who played for the FlyingBrooms , in the match between Germany and Switzerland, which won them 2-1.
