Baugeois

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Baugeois is a French partial landscape in the Anjou , which describes the area of the former arrondissement of Baugé .

history

In the 16th century, the town of Baugé was a central administrative center for an area that spanned the north of what is now the Maine-et-Loire department to Château-la-Vallière in what is now the Indre-et-Loire department and Le Lude in what is now the Sarthe department was enough. The actual Baugeois today only includes the area of those cantons that were combined in the Arrondissement of Baugé in the context of a territorial reform undertaken for the whole of France in 1790 . These were the cantons of Baugé , Beaufort-en-Vallée , Fougeré , Jarzé , Longué , Mazé , Noyant , Mouliherne , Seiches and Vernoil . The cantons of Fougeré, Jarzé, Mazé, Mouliherne and Vernoil were dissolved again in 1801 and the area was distributed to the remaining ones. In 1806, the canton of Durtal was added to the Baugé arrondissement . The arrondissement existed until 1926. Since then, the cantons of the Baugeois belong to the arrondissements of Saumur and Angers .

Attractions

Some of the village churches are real treasure chests and are among the pearls of architecture in Anjou. However, the twisted towers that some of the churches have, for example in Pontigné, are characteristic . The old town of Baugé has a somewhat morbid charm, while the castle has been expanded into a modern multimedia museum. Beaufort-en-Vallée also has a small but picturesque old town and a museum. The Château de Montgeoffroy near Mazé is one of the better-known facilities in the Loire region. Here and there in the Baugeois there are ruins of old fortresses, but also dolmens from Celtic times.

Leisure and Tourism

The Baugeois is not a center of tourism and only participates in Loire tourism in the south, near Le Ménitré . There are also other good accommodations or simple rural gites and campsites to be found. There are good hiking opportunities in the characteristic, extensive oak forests, and several long-distance hiking trails cross the area.

In terms of sport, there is a wide range to be found. The regional version of the boules game , the boule de fort , which is cultivated with perseverance , must not be forgotten . The roots of this game can be traced back to the Middle Ages.

literature

The magazine Les Cahiers de Baugeois , published in the village of Beauvau in the canton of Seiches, deals in detail with the history of the Baugeois.
