Varennes-sur-Loire belongs to the Arrondissement of Saumur and is part of the canton Longué-Jumelles (until 2015: canton Allonnes ). The inhabitants are called Varennais .

Varennes-sur-Loire is located in the Anjou wine-growing region on the Loire . The Authion limits the community to the north. Varennes-sur-Loire is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Brain-sur-Allonnes in the north, Chouzé-sur-Loire in the east, Montsoreau and Turquant in the south, Parnay in the south and south-west, Souzay-Champigny in the south-west, Villebernier in the west and Allonnes in the Northwest.
