Antoinette Perry
Mary Antoinette Perry (born June 27, 1888 in Denver , Colorado , † June 28, 1946 in New York City , New York ) was an American actress , director and co-founder of the American Theater Wing . The Tony Award is named after her.
Life
Antoinette Perry was born in Denver , Colorado and, as a child, emulated her aunt and uncle, who were both renowned actors. After her marriage to Frank W. Frueauff in 1909, she gave up acting, but returned to the stage in 1924 after the death of her husband. In 1928 she began with her first theater productions and eventually directed the production of the play Mein Freund Harvey (Harvey) , which became one of the most successful Broadway plays .
She was a co-founder and later chairwoman of the American Theater Wing , which operated the so-called Stage Door Canteens during World War II .
One year after her death in New York, the American Theater Wing created the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theater, named after her, which annually honors outstanding achievements in the field of theater (including musical theater ). Today this award is commonly known as the Tony Award for short .
