Cecil Cunningham (born August 2, 1888 in St. Louis , Missouri , † April 17, 1959 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American theater and film actress .

Life

Cecil Cunningham performed several times on New York's Broadway between 1913 and 1919 . She was mostly seen in musical comedies such as William Schwenck Gilbert's Iolanthe or Victor Léon's The Prince of the Mountains with the music of Franz Lehár . From 1929 to 1957 she starred in more than 80 films. She was mostly cast in supporting roles as a know-it-all old lady, such as B. next to Greer Garson in Mervyn LeRoy's orphan drama Flowers in Dust (1941). She had one of her best-known roles as Aunt Patsy in Leo McCarey's comedy The Terrible Truth (1937) opposite Irene Dunne and Cary Grant . Furthermore, Cunningham was also used on American television in the 1950s.

In 1915 she married the author Jean C. Havez. Just two years later, the marriage was divorced again. Cunningham died in Los Angeles in 1959 at the age of 70 . Her grave is on the local Chapel of the Pines Crematory.
