Du Barry Was a Lady is an American film musical from 1943 , produced by MGM , starring Red Skelton , Lucille Ball and Gene Kelly . The film is based on the musical of the same name , which premiered on December 6, 1939 in New York .

Louis Blore works in the cloakroom in a nightclub. May Daly, the star of the club, is the object of his desire. She is in love with the poor dancer Alec Howe, but the only option for her is marrying a rich man. When Louis surprisingly wins the lottery and May proposes marriage, she accepts. In order to get his rival out of the way, Louis wants to give Alec knockout drops , but due to a mishap of the waiter he drinks the drink himself. In a comatose state, Louis dreams that he lives in the 18th century and that he is King Louis XV . May Daly is the Countess Du Barry and his lover, who, like in reality, does not love him. When Alec Howe as the Black Arrow threatens the royal couple to demand justice for the people, Du Barry falls in love with him. When Louis comes to, he realizes that Alec is the one for May.
