Ann Sothern (actually Harriette Arlene Lake ; born January 22, 1909 in Valley City , North Dakota ; † March 15, 2001 in Ketchum , Idaho ) was an American actress.

Life

Ann Sothern was born the granddaughter of the eminent mechanical engineer Simon Lake . After training as a singer by her mother, who was a soprano, Sothern made her film debut after some time at the theater in New York towards the end of the silent film era . She played a number of extras and small supporting roles, but was unsatisfied with her career and returned to Broadway , where she had some success. She returned to Hollywood in 1933 and became a popular starlet in numerous B-films at RKO and Columbia Pictures .

Her big breakthrough came with the move to MGM in the late 1930s, where she became very popular as a somewhat naive but warm blonde in the series Maisie , which comprised a total of ten films. Occasionally the studio gave her substantial roles, for example in the musicals Lady Be Good and Panama Hattie . She offered one of her best performances in the film Cry Havoc , which portrayed the dramatic suffering of Red Cross nurses in the Pacific. She had the high point of her career with A Letter to Three Women . Shortly thereafter, she went to television, where she had great success with Private Secretary and The Ann Sothern Show .

In the early 1960s she returned to the screen, this time as a character actress for several supporting roles because of her increasing age. She received her first and only Oscar nomination in 1987 for her supporting role in The Whales of August , which starred her alongside Lillian Gish , Vincent Price and Bette Davis . Whales of August was her last film.

She was married to Roger Pryor from 1936 to 1943 and to Robert Sterling from 1943 to 1949 , both marriages were divorced. Her daughter Tisha Sterling from her marriage to Sterling is also an actress. Ann Sothern spent her twilight years in the small town of Ketchum, where she died of heart failure in 2001 at the age of 92. She is represented with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
