Simon Lake
Simon Lake (* 4. September 1866 in Pleasantville , New Jersey ; † 23. June 1945 in Milford , Connecticut ) was an American mechanical engineering - engineering and marine engineers .
He received over two hundred patents in the field of shipbuilding and, along with John Philip Holland, was one of the first to have submarines built for the United States Navy . In 1902 he invented the extendable periscope for submarines. The actress Ann Sothern was his granddaughter. At the turn of the century, he constructed Argonaut- class submarines .
