Joseph Breen

Joseph Ignatius Breen (born October 14, 1888 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † December 5, 1965 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film censor .

Career

Joseph Breen worked for the Motion Picture Association of America , a self-organization of American film producers and distributors, for over 20 years . His main field of activity was the enforcement of the Hays Code (actually Motion Picture Production Code ), a compilation of guidelines for the production of American films with regard to the morally acceptable representation of crime and sexual content in particular. Breen started the business in 1934 and held it until 1955. Breen retired in 1955 and received an honorary Oscar at the 1954 award for his services in enforcing the Motion Picture Production Code .
